Luminescence, and Translucency

On this hot summer day, I was allowed to paint in the Alameda community garden. Though I was let in, if I had left, I would not have been able to reenter. So I painted without leaving the garden for 8 hours straight!
I do not mix colors on the paper. I let each layer dry before I apply the next one. The dark background in this painting, has more than thirty layers of watercolor washes. This way of applying watercolor amplifies its translucency and gives it a luminescence that cannot be achieved otherwise.
